Since it’s the holiday season, this month’s song is about a gift, one to a very special Holiday.

Billie Holiday received her favorite gift from a prisoner – a frame made of matchsticks, “for our picture, when we finally meet.” They never did. But the matchstick frame was Billie’s prize possession, and for years it stood (empty) on her mantle. 

I read about this one night in the liner notes of an old LP. I sat down before going to bed and typed whatever came into my head. The next day I picked up my guitar, hit record and hoped to catch some idea.

The song wrote itself in one go. It rarely happens but I got lucky. Especially to have the tape rolling. (Tip: always have the tape rolling.)
